History & Purpose
The original group Kinfolk Trackers Genealogical Society was incorporated on 23 February 1994 by former members of the Eastern North Carolina Genealogical Society. On 11 September 2001, new by laws were adopted and the name changed to the Craven County Genealogical Society of North Carolina which were filed on 11 May 2007.
We welcome you to join us to discover your family history. The Society has a vibrant and diverse membership representing not only Craven County and North Carolina, but also many other states as well. Our members are dedicated to fostering interest in the research, preservation, and sharing of family heritages.
Our active membership are working to carry out the purposes of the Society as stated in our by laws.
Purposes of the Society:
1. Encourage collection, preservation and dissemination of knowledge and information about genealogical and related historical, biographical and heraldic data.
2. Encourage adherence to principles of accuracy and thoroughness in research.
3. Encourage careful documentation.
4. Encourage, promote, and provide genealogical education and training for all persons interested in these endeavors.
On September 11, 2001, Kinfolk Trackers adopted new bylaws and became Craven County Genealogical Society of North Carolina, Inc. Also in 2001, the U.S. Senate declared October as Family History Month. The next two years, the Society, in association with the New Bern-Craven County Public Library, invited people to take their Bibles that contained family records to the library to have each family page photocopied twice on archival paper. The library retained one copy for its genealogical collection and the family received the other. The Society continues to exhibit at the Library during Family History Month.
A new logo and updated Web site debuted in 2002 and again in 2011. The Society appointed archivists to preserve the minutes, newsletters, special projects, membership records, and corporation documents ten years after its founding.
Continuing genealogical education is the core of the Society's mission. Beginner genealogy classes help enrich the membership at every level. Approximately sixty people belong to Craven County Genealogical Society of North Carolina, Inc. Several members live beyond the greater Craven County area.
Beginning in 2007, volunteers help the Craven County Register of Deeds fulfill requests for deeds and vital records that are beyond the scope of the office. The Society meets monthly except in July and August. Programs consist of guest speakers and member presentations on a variety of topics that interest the members.
"For the good of the society" provides the opportunity for members to exchange information and seek help with their genealogical research. Between meetings, KinTracks, publishes helpful tips, the latest in technology, and a variety of topics for the avid genealogist. Guests are welcomed at every meeting and invited to join the Society.
The Society promotes high standards in genealogical and family history research, documentation, analysis, and ethics.
